Alene Carter Matthis

Alene Carter Matthis, 93, of Albemarle, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family. A funeral service for Mrs. Matthis will be held at 2:00PM on Friday, December 15, 2017 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Norwood, NC officiated by Rev. Lowell Brown and Rev. Ray Carter. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00PM on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care in Albemarle, NC. The family will be gathering at her daughter Mae Parsons’ home.

Mrs. Matthis was born February 24, 1924 in Clinton, NC, to the late Maggie Fryar Carter and John Wright Carter. Alene enjoyed sewing, cooking, and always doing for and thinking about others. While being a preacher’s wife, she loved visiting people with her husband and helping with their ministry.

Alene is survived by her daughter Mae Matthis Parsons (Clem) of Albemarle, NC; son Ronnie Stephen Matthis (Jan) of Albemarle, NC; daughter-in law Diane Fisher Matthis of Havelock, NC; grandchildren: Jeffrey Parsons (Melissa) of Albemarle, NC, Tanya Furr (Michael) of Oakboro, NC, Brian Matthis (Jo) of Beaufort, NC, and Daniel Matthis of Albemarle, NC; great-grandchildren: Brian Matthis, Jr. ( Brittney), Matthew and Emma Furr, Benjamin and  Samuel Parsons, Dixie, Ivy, and Liberty Matthis; and brothers Bernice Carter and Graham Carter of Clinton, NC. She is preceded in death by her husband Rev. Odell Stephen Matthis; son Odell “Mac” McDaniel Matthis; brothers Albert, Edward, and Joe Carter; and sisters Jessie Jones and Oleta Fields.

Memorial Contributions can be made to Hospice of Stanly & the Uwharrie at 960 N. First St. Albemarle, NC 28001 or to Gideons International at 22461 Oakwood Rd. Albemarle, NC 28001.

Stanly overwhelmingly met or exceeded our family’s expectations. Family and friends both expressed how thoughtful, caring and professional they were. We’re glad you’re in Locust!


We never felt hurried or rushed in any way even though they had other funerals that day.  Everyone at Stanly Funeral Home made us feel like we were family and did everything they could for us in this most trying time in our lives.


Everyone went out of their way to make sure that every detail was good with me.  Their kindness, patience and love they show is superior.  Stephen Aldridge and his ENTIRE staff are the best.


The whole staff was wonderful but Stephen Aldridge was excellent, even sending us a note one month later.
