John Bahner, Jr.

John Bahner, Jr., 72, of Albemarle, NC passed away July 31, 2017 in the CHS Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC. His service will be 2 PM Saturday August 5, 2017 in the Stanly Funeral & Cremation Care Chapel with Rev. Bud Fisher officiating and with Military rites conducted by the Stanly County DAV. A gathering of family and friends will follow the service.

Mr. Bahner was born February 17, 1945 in Evanston, IL, and was the son of the late John McLean Bahner and Margaret Allen Hart Bahner.  He was a graduate of Wake Forest University, Winston Salem, NC with a BA in Political Science and a graduate from Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IL with a Juris Doctorate.

John was a veteran of the US Army with the rank of Captain, serving in Germany and Vietnam and earning the Bronze Star. He practiced law in Albemarle since 1976, initially with Ron Burris and Charles Lefler, then with R. Ward Medlin in the firm of Bahner and Medlin and was former president twice of the Stanly County Bar Association. He was a member of MENSA, Albemarle Kiwanis Club and Albemarle Rotary Club and served on the Board of the Group Homes for the Autistic and Habitat for Humanity.

Mr. Bahner was an attorney for Stanly County Department of Social Services and Albemarle City Schools.  He served Wake Forest University in many capacities including the Alumni in Admissions program, Presidential Scholarship Committee, the James B. Hunt Scholarship Committee and served as Chairman of the Stanly County Board of Elections.

John was a complex loving and brilliant man. He deeply cared for his family, friends and his flock of dogs and cats. He treasured his trips to the coast and loved the sound and sights of the ocean. John and his friend Henry loved searching for antiques together. John had a deep passion for most any sport, but most especially for his beloved Wake Forest!

Mr. Bahner was preceded in death by his wife Anne Fisher Bahner.  He is survived by two daughters Jessica E. Bahner of Albemarle, NC, Angela M. Bahner of Albemarle, NC, a brother Spencer Bahner of Seattle, WA, sister Betsy Bahner Aster of McMinnville, OR, grandson John Clayton Russell of Albemarle, NC, dear friend Jessica Rummage of Albemarle, NC and loyal Legal Assistant Suzanne Whealan of Albemarle, NC.

Memorials may be given to the National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY, 10016 or American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA, 23060-9979.

We never felt hurried or rushed in any way even though they had other funerals that day.  Everyone at Stanly Funeral Home made us feel like we were family and did everything they could for us in this most trying time in our lives.


Everyone went out of their way to make sure that every detail was good with me.  Their kindness, patience and love they show is superior.  Stephen Aldridge and his ENTIRE staff are the best.


The whole staff was wonderful but Stephen Aldridge was excellent, even sending us a note one month later.


Excellent customer service and attention to detail from start to finish.

Personal touch – treated you like family – genuine expression of sympathy and condolences-

We personally know these folks and they have served our family and extended family since the early 1960s.
