Raymond Elwood “Woody” Burleson Jr

Raymond Elwood “Woody” Burleson Jr., 75, of Albemarle passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019 in his home.  His funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at Albemarle First Assembly with Pastor Bob Gruver officiating.  Burial will follow in the Centerview Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Albemarle First Assembly from 10 until 11 prior to the funeral service. 

Born October 16, 1943 in Stanly County, NC, he was the son of the late Raymond Elwood Burleson Sr. and Vergie Earnhardt Benner.  He was a retired Steel Worker with the Daniel Corporation and was a Charter Member of Albemarle First Assembly helping lay the first brick.  Mr. Burleson was involved in the creation of the Stanly Arts Guild.  He and his wife founded Shirwood Ministries at Oak Island, NC and ministered to the homeless.  Woody shared Jesus with everyone he met. 

Mr. Burleson is survived by his wife Shirley Yates Burleson of the home, a son Kenneth E. Burleson of Concord, daughter Sandra Gouge of Albemarle, stepson Daniel C. Lewis, brother John R. Burleson of Greensboro, NC, sisters Barbara Bailey of Fuquay Varina, NC, and Dian Deal of Lexington, NC, 7 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by Addison Cord and his family who have been a special part of his life.  He was preceded in death by his first wife Charlotte Davis Burleson and a brother Jerry Burleson.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stanly and the Uwharrie, 960 N. First St., Albemarle, NC 28001.

    I grew up on Harwood Street two blocks from Woody, playing hide and seek in the 50’s an we could never fibd

    Mr.Burleson, will be missed, just knowing him and Mrs.Shirley for a year I think they both are loving people.There was never a dull moment when Mr Burleson what’s in your presence, he truly loved the Lord and his family. I am praying for the family.

Stanly overwhelmingly met or exceeded our family’s expectations. Family and friends both expressed how thoughtful, caring and professional they were. We’re glad you’re in Locust!


We never felt hurried or rushed in any way even though they had other funerals that day.  Everyone at Stanly Funeral Home made us feel like we were family and did everything they could for us in this most trying time in our lives.


Everyone went out of their way to make sure that every detail was good with me.  Their kindness, patience and love they show is superior.  Stephen Aldridge and his ENTIRE staff are the best.


The whole staff was wonderful but Stephen Aldridge was excellent, even sending us a note one month later.
