Louise Whatley Poplin

Louise Whatley Poplin, 87, of Raleigh, NC, passed away Tuesday June 16, 2020 at Transitions LifeCare, Raleigh, NC. Her graveside service will be 11am Saturday June 20, 2020 in the Poplin Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Richard Carlisle officiating.

 Mrs. Poplin was born April 14, 1933 in Fort Benning, Georgia, the daughter of the late Col. Vachel Davis Whatley and Margaret Lampke Whatley. She was educated at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. Louise held secretarial positions for various departments within the State of North Carolina. Mrs. Poplin was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC, where she taught the two-year olds Sunday School Class for many years. She was an avid reader and loved to cook and take care of her family. She also loved to sew and was known for her beautiful quilts and wall hangings made from her quilt designs.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband Johnny Gaskin Poplin. She is survived by two daughters, Suzanne Louise Waldrep (Jason) of Haslet, TX and Jeannie Poplin Hutton (Henry) of Raleigh, NC and three grandchildren, Johnny Waldrep of Haslet, TX, Matthew T. Hutton of Greensboro, NC and Mitchell D. Hutton of Charlotte, NC. She is preceded in death by her sister, Dale (Joy) McElwee.

Stanly overwhelmingly met or exceeded our family’s expectations. Family and friends both expressed how thoughtful, caring and professional they were. We’re glad you’re in Locust!


We never felt hurried or rushed in any way even though they had other funerals that day.  Everyone at Stanly Funeral Home made us feel like we were family and did everything they could for us in this most trying time in our lives.


Everyone went out of their way to make sure that every detail was good with me.  Their kindness, patience and love they show is superior.  Stephen Aldridge and his ENTIRE staff are the best.


The whole staff was wonderful but Stephen Aldridge was excellent, even sending us a note one month later.
